Appalachian Plateau
The Appalachian Plateau is a mountainous region located in northwest corner of Georgia. The Georgia portion of the Appalachian Mountains is over eighty miles. This region in northern Georgia features cooler temperatures because of its higher elevation. The area gets a similar amount of rainfall to the rest of the state, but the precipitation is more likely to fall as snow in the colder months. Although the mountains receive some cooler weather the region still gets hot and humid, as temperatures can reach the 80s, with highs sometimes hitting in the 90s. In winter, the highs average in the 40s, and lows in the 20s.
The Appalachian region is mostly covered in oak forests such as basswood, sugar, maple, beech, birch, and hemlock. The soil is mostly clay based with limestone and clay rocks. A number of animals found in this region are turtles, black bears, deer, red and gray foxes, bobcats, bats, and hawks.
